SUCH SWEET THUNDER: The Duke and The Bard
May 2, 2008 @ 8pm
Memorial Hall, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
A collaboration with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra
Members of Fiasco’s acting company joined the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra for Such Sweet Thunder. This thrilling concert weaved together the work of two artistic giants – William Shakespeare and Duke Ellington. Fiasco’s actors performed selections from Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets, then the NCJRO will present Ellington’s musical tribute to that text. NCJRO Artistic Director Jim Ketch describes this event as “ground-breaking and innovative. Duke Ellington’s creative jazz genius and the timeless words of William Shakespeare meet face to face on the stage. Imagine a reading from Romeo and Juliet followed by the poignant music The Star-Crossed Lovers. Weaving the music and words together was the Mistress of ceremonies and host UNC Professor Julie Fishell, acclaimed actress from Carolina’s Playmaker’s Repertory Company.”

"Table Work" means something different to each theater artist. For Fiasco, the table is a place of infinite opportunity. It is the place where we begin to discover what's possible, a chance to find out what a play can be by committing to it as fully as we can. Fiasco actors throw themselves into the text with whatever is at their disposal, taking risks and finding rewards at every turn.
Fiasco's TABLE WORK SERIES presents inventive, on-book performances. This series is an intimate and exciting way for our audiences to experience first-hand Fiasco's dynamic approach to rehearsal.
We'll be presenting a handful of these events in 2010, more information coming soon!
